Early Life: – Gurpreet began playing football when he was eight years old and joined the St Stephen’s Academy in 2000. Gurpreet was chosen for his state youth team, the Punjab U16s, after excelling at St Stephen’s Academy. At 2006, he made his youth state-level debut in Haldwani.
He continued at St. Stephen’s Academy until 2009, when he joined the I-League club East Bengal as a young player, spending the balance of the year with the Kolkata-based teams’ development team.
International Career: – On November 5, 2009, Gurpreet made his debut for the India U19s against by the Iraq U19s in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualifying. He was then called up to the Indian senior team of 23 for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. In a 1-1 tie with Turkmenistan, he made his debut.
He was included to the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying roster against Nepal, however, he did not play in either match. Gurpreet made his senior squad debut against Iran in a 2018 World Cup qualification in Bangalore, starting in a 0-3 defeat. On October 8, he made his next debut against Turkmenistan, losing 2-1. On November 12, 2015, he also maintained a clean sheet against Guam, which concluded 1-0.
2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: – He made his 35th appearance for India in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Oman on 5 September 2019, conceding two goals as India lost the match 1-2. Gurpreet was awarded the captain’s armband in the second group stage encounter 2022 World Cup Qualifiers against Asian Champions, Qatar, after skipper Sunil Chettri was injured.
