Judy Tenuta Career
Tenuta began her comedic career in the late 1970s, playing openers and small-time gigs on the Chicago comedy circuit. Tenuta stunned audiences by dressing up as the Virgin Mary during her debut performance, and after being persuaded by her friends to integrate an accordion into her routine, she proceeded to build the character into her legendary identity as the wisecracking Love Goddess.

Tenuta’s performance revolved mostly around an exaggerated, campy, and eccentric character known primarily as The Love Goddess. The Petite Flower, Aphrodite of the Accordion, Fashion-Plate Saint, Queen of Candy-Pants, Princess of Panty Shields, Empress of Elvis Impersonators, and the Buffer of Foreheads were some of her other monikers. Her act, which combined observational and insults comedy, was one of surreal craziness. Every presentation opened with the Love Goddess’s famous welcome, Hi Pigs!, before delving into a bawdy, chaotic, and whimsical tornado of stories, impressions, and songs. According to one assessment of a 1987 performance, Tenuta’s presentation was a genuine bombardment of atavistic growlings and gum-chewing bimbo poses, vulgar gags, and political offensiveness.
