Production Company of Ponniyin Selvan-1
Lyca Productions, Madras Talkies: Ponniyin Selvan, a film adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s historical novel of the same name, was announced by M. G. Ramachandran in 1958. Ramachandran purchased the film rights to the novel for 10,000 (equivalent to 810,000 or US$10,000 in 2020) and plans to produce, direct, and star in the adaptation, which will star Vyjayanthimala, Gemini Ganesan, Padmini, Savitri, B. Saroja Devi, M. N. Rajam, T. S. Balaiah, M. N. Nambiar, O. A. K. Thevar, and V. Nagaiah Ramachandran was in an accident before shooting could begin, and the scar took six months to heal; Ramachandran was not able to proceed with the film also after renewing the rights after four years.
Mani Ratnam claimed in a January 1994 interview with Filmfare that adapting the novel was one of his “dream projects” that he intended to work on throughout his career. Ratnam claimed that he worked on a first draught of the film with actor-director Kamal Haasan, who had purchased the rights to the novel, but the project was abandoned since it did not make economic sense at the time.
Ratnam rekindled his interest in the project in late 2010, collaborating with writer Jeyamohan to complete the screenplay for Ponniyin Selvan. Ratnam wanted to produce the film independently at first, with the goal of joining up with a larger production firm later in the film-making process. It was expected to be filmed in Tamil at a cost of 100 crores. Soon after, technicians like as composer A. R. Rahman, cinematographer Santosh Sivan, editor A. Sreekar Prasad, and art director Sabu Cyril were assigned to the production.
