In 1869, Lafayette industrialist John Purdue gave land and funds to build a college of science, technology, and agriculture in his honour. On September 16, 1874, the first sessions were held, with six professors and 39 students. It has been named by major institutional rankings as one of the greatest public institutions in the United States, and it is well-known for its engineering curriculum.

According to the school’s police chief, a Purdue University student was arrested on a murder charge Wednesday and suspected of murdering his roommate overnight in a residential hall on the campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. Varun Manish Chheda, 20, a senior from Indianapolis studying data science, was identified as the killed student by Purdue University Police Chief Lesley Wiete as well as the Tippecanoe County coroner’s office.

According to Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello & Purdue University police, Varun Manish Chheda, 20, of Indianapolis, died early Wednesday inside his first-floor dorm room at McCutcheon Hall, an apparent victim of homicide. The cause of death, according to Costello, was numerous sharp-force traumatic injuries. Purdue said in a news conference about 10 a.m. Wednesday that Chheda’s roommate, Ji Min Sha, 22, is the suspect and is in arrest. Chheda studied data science. According to the press conference, Ji Min Sha was a cyber security major who went by the moniker Jimmy. The Tippecanoe County Jail announced at 10 a.m. that the suspect hadn’t been booked.

According to investigators, Chheda’s killing is Purdue’s first on-campus homicide in more than eight years. Andrew F. Boldt, 21, of West Bend, Wisconsin, was fatally shot on Jan. 21, 2014, in the basement section of the electrical engineering building, according to a statement issued by the school following the event. Chheda’s death, according to University President Mitch Daniels, was “as awful an occurrence as we can imagine happening on our campus,” adding that “our hearts and sympathies go out to all those impacted by this dreadful event.” According to the Purdue website, around 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled for the autumn semester.

Students are being supported by staff members in resident halls and clinicians from the school’s counselling and psychiatric services, he said in a statement released Wednesday morning. Daniels assured everyone that everyone on campus is safe. “When compared to cities with Purdue’s population (about 60,000), we encounter a miniscule fraction of the violent and property crime that occurs elsewhere,” he stated. On a day like today, such figures are meaningless, he adds. A death on our campus or among our Purdue family members has a profound impact on everyone of us.
