Career: – Leacock’s father chose to travel to Canada when he was six years old to work on a farm in Ontario. Leacock’s own father drank and left soon after, intending to make a fortune in Manitoba.
His grandpa enrolled the young Leacock in public school, where he excelled. He was intellectually talented and well-liked by the other students at school. Leacock went home after graduating with aspirations to attend university, but his attempts to advance his studies were hampered by financial constraints. Leacock survived his first year at Toronto University on a tiny stipend but was unable to continue.
He instead chose to teach and accepted a position at Toronto College, a vocation he did not enjoy at first. It did, however, allow him to finish his university degree at the same time, and it was around this period that he began writing seriously. His family had built a fortune farming plantations in Madeira, and the island had a long connection with the British Empire.
He relocated to Chicago for a time to study politics, and after a series of academic positions, he eventually became a professor at McGill University in Montreal.
