Plath first met poet Ted Hughes on February 25, 1956. In a 1961 BBC interview (now held by the British Library Sound Archive), Plath describes how she met Hughes. Plath and Hughes went to the United States in June 1957, and Plath began teaching at her old mater, Smith College, in September. She found it impossible to balance teaching and writing, so the pair relocated to Boston in the middle of 1958. Plath worked as a receptionist in the mental section of Massachusetts General Hospital and attended creative writing courses led by poet Robert Lowell in the evenings (also attended by the writers Anne Sexton and George Starbuck).

Both Lowell and Sexton pushed Plath to write about her experiences, which she did. She openly shared her melancholy with Lowell and her suicide attempts with Sexton, which inspired her to write from a more feminine perspective. Plath began to see herself as a more serious, focused poet and short-story writer. At this time, Plath and Hughes met the poet W. S. Merwin, who appreciated their writing and became a longtime friend. Plath began psychoanalytic treatment again in December, this time with Ruth Beuscher.
